Durham-based company [Urban Planet] recognized at DISCOVER 2013 exporting conference

RALEIGH, N.C. – On September 17, 2013, the U.S. Commercial Service (USCS) presented an export achievement certificate to Urban Planet in recognition of the company’s recent export success in Indonesia. The award was presented at the DISCOVER 2013 exporting conference by Antwaun Griffin, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Domestic Operations with the U.S. Department of Commerce and Rep. David Price (D-NC).

Urban Planet is an award-winning developer and distributor of educational programs created for mobile, tablet, and computer. The company’s innovative educational products can now be found across the globe. As a global industry leader, Urban Planet now has the largest library of digital English lessons for mobile delivery. With products available on five continents and 40 countries, the company delivers more than 5,000,000 Urban English™ lessons per month worldwide.

The company has tapped into the U.S. Commercial Services assistance through the Raleigh Export Assistance Center. With the USCS’s help and education, the company has been able to determine which markets are best suited for their products. In fact, the company was able to target Indonesia as one of the best markets for its products and was then able to launch its main product, Urban English™, attracting 60,000 daily subscribers within just 90 days in that market alone. The company now has nearly 200,000 daily subscribers across the globe.

“People are hungry for an easy, creative and accessible way to learn the English language as English language proficiency has proven to be essential to any non-English speaking country’s immediate and long-term economic future,” said Brian OliverSmith, CEO of Urban Planet. “In addition to educating the business community, Urban English also serves an even more important function, it allows people from different cultures the ability to communicate and understand each other, thus enabling both parties to bridge cultural gaps and form more meaningful communal relationships, which in my opinion is the program’s greatest achievement and responsibility.”

“By reaching out to clients overseas, Urban Planet has helped to not only increase its sales but support jobs and the economy here home. The company’s work with USCS is a testament to the power of one of our region’s greatest advantages: the ability to incubate robust public-private partnerships that increase our competitiveness,” said Congressman David Price (D-NC).

DISCOVER 2013 is a premier exporting conference for U.S. companies to explore new international sales opportunities, innovative tools to be competitive, and the next wave of rapidly growing international markets. This sold-out event will welcome some 400 attendees to Raleigh, and feature U.S. commercial diplomats visiting from U.S. embassies and consulates in 20 countries around the globe.
