NC State Treasurer Janet Cowell to Speak at Capital Connects Event in the Triad



November 4, 2013, Greensboro NC: The Greensboro Partnership announced that State Treasurer Janet Cowell will kick off the annual Capital Connects 2013 event at 5:30 p.m. on November 13, 2013 at Gateway University Research Park. Treasurer Cowell will discuss the recent activities of the North Carolina Innovation Fund, which was established to invest in both private equity funds and companies with a nexus to North Carolina.

Capital Connects features presentations by ten of the region’s most interesting entrepreneurial investment opportunities and is followed by a networking reception. Capital Connects is an initiative of the Greensboro Partnership in collaboration with the Piedmont Angel Network and the Piedmont Triad Partnership. As State Treasurer, Janet Cowell brings over two decades of private and public sector financial leadership to the people of North Carolina. Treasurer Cowell, who holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the prestigious Wharton School of Business, blends her experience as an international stock analyst with her insights as a local elected official and legislator to serve all North Carolinians.

Janet Cowell was first elected as Treasurer in 2008 - the first woman to hold the post, and she was re-elected in 2012 with 54% of the vote.  Under her leadership, the state is recognized as one of the most fiscally-sound in the nation, with AAA ratings from all three bond agencies.

As Treasurer, Cowell ensures retirement security and affordable health care for thousands of teachers, public employees, retirees and their families.  Treasurer Cowell oversees the state’s $80 billion pension fund, which is one of the top-funded in the country. She is also a member of the State Board of Education and the Community College Board.

The North Carolina Innovation Fund
(NCIF) was established in 2010, with funding from the state’s $80 billion pension fund, to invest in both private equity funds and companies with a nexus to North Carolina.  The Customized Fund Investment Group of Credit Suisse was chosen to manage the $232 million Fund, of which $170 million has been committed to seven private equity managers and 11 companies through co-investments alongside private equity managers.

To date NCIF co-investments have helped to attract out-of-state private equity firms to invest in our state and supported over 6,200 North Carolina jobs, spanning the state from Statesville to Wilmington. NCIF’s investments represent a diverse array of sectors, including health care, industrials, financial services, manufacturing, automotive, software, communications and logistics. NCIF continues to seek investment opportunities with a nexus to North Carolina.
