Press Release: Tearscience’s LipiView® Medical device wins medical design excellence award

LipiView Helps Eye Care Physicians Visualize Dry Eye Patients’ Tear Films

Morrisvile, N.C.,—May 31, 2011TearScience, Inc., a privately-held medical device company, today announced that its LipiView® Ocular Surface Interferometer has received the Medical Design Excellence Award from UBM Canon.  The LipiView provides eye care physicians with a new, in-office tear film procedure for dry eye patients, which takes less than 5 minutes.

“We are honored to receive this distinguished award,” said Tim Willis, chief executive officer and co-founder for TearScience.  “Historically, physicians have had to rely on subjective tests to evaluate dry eye patients.  Now, LipiView provides a new, quantifiable alternative for evaluating patients’ tear films.  When you consider just how thin a typical tear film is in nanometers, it’s amazing what the LipiView can do.”

LipiView and the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System make up TearScience’s overall solution to help eye care practices meet the needs of dry eye patients.  LipiFlow® is designed to treat the primary cause of evaporative dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, which results in a lipid deficiency of the eye’s natural tear film.  Of the more than 100 million dry eye sufferers worldwide, approximately 65 percent have evaporative dry eye.  Patients with a lipid deficiency typically experience symptoms such as dryness, irritation, burning, and redness.  LipiFlow was not eligible for the Medical Design Excellence Award as TearScience is currently seeking U.S. FDA clearance for the device.

The Medical Design Excellence Awards competition is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products cleared for marketing by the FDA.  Entries are evaluated on the basis of design and engineering features.

The 2011 Medical Design Excellence Award winners will be honored at a presentation ceremony
on June 8, 2011 in New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, in conjunction with the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East Conference and Exposition.

UBM Canon is a leading business-to-business media company dedicated to the advanced manufacturing sector.
